Tropical flavours, 8-bit sound and infectious hooks unite in this release from London based producer, NKC. Donning a distinctly carnival-vibe, these tracks are made for moving.
Steel drum laced anthem ‘Marie’ and brutal offbeat tech-step treat 'Ghettotechno' are the perfect soundtrack to a sun-drenched summer and are already getting an airing on the live circuit, despite 19-year-old NKC himself keeping a low profile.
‘Marie’ is the drop you’ve been waiting for. A sunny steel drum riff floats along the top of tribal drums and clocking in around the 127bpm mark, this A-side is a bonafide party weapon guaranteed to kick things up a couple of notches in any club it frequents.
On the flipside 'Ghettotechno' goes in even harder with short stabs and a punchy offbeat rhythm, offset with a complex drum pattern. This track is crafted with the live set in mind and with a beat this unrelenting it’s easy to predict that this B-side will keep feet stomping well into the early hours.
With the likes of Jackmaster, Dubbel Dutch and Marcus Nasty dropping these tunes in their live sets, the third release on Awkward Movements is already setting dance floors alight across the length and breadth of the country, and furthermore, establishing this label as one to keep a close eye on.
These two post-funky tracks are available in the form of 300 limited hand-stamped 12"s and a digital download to boot, and are a staple DJ tool for the summer season.

This month we're delighted to welcome a new addition to the Example Family in the form of Manchester DJ and speaker wizard Al Sonar.  He knows is stuff when it comes to DnB so seemed a logical choice for our new monthly single reviews column.

SGN026 - Technicolour & Kormatic : Those Feelings/Changeling

A great addition to the Shogun catalogue, both tracks filled with the warmth and depth we've come to expect from the label. Changeling opens with an leisurely airy intro which is developed into a soulful and hauntingly melodic piece. The second of the two tracks, Those Feelings, features another soulful vocal which is countered with a stunning ripping bassline.

CRIT054 - S.P.Y. & Kasra : Surface/Control

Only the second ever single release from label boss Kasra and this time he's joined by the Brazilian heavyweight, S.P.Y. Both track are very different, Control is a punchy and heavily driven percussive track, while Surface is exactly the sort of relentless stepper we've come to expect from anything to do with S.P.Y.

REDSEAL008 - Tokyo Prose : Introducing Tokyo Prose (part 1) : Rose Without Raid/LPK SoundREDSEAL009 - Tokyo Prose : Introducing Tokyo Prose (part 2) : Saving Grace/Knucklehead

These debutants from New Zealand have deployed a series of tracks, across multiple vinyls and a CD album, which show a huge amount of potential. Both Rose Without Rain and Saving Grace sound remarkably like something produced by Calibre, while LPK Sound is a magnificent eerie piece which would carry nicely in any Autonomic set. Knucklehead is well produced and incorporates some excellent samples, it doesn't however coalesce into anything more than that.
